Assessment & Progress
Measuring Progress at The Courtyard
Individual progress at The Courtyard is established by determining each student’s academic baseline upon entry. Students are initially streamed in each subject using data from their previous settings. Subject teachers then administer baseline assessments to confirm and ensure appropriate placement across all subjects.
Formal progress is measured summatively at the end of each term through end-of-topic tests or past examination papers. Progress is evaluated by comparing end-of-term scores against baseline data. For most subjects, student percentages translate into a RAGG rating:
Red: No progress
Amber: Some progress
Green: Good progress
Gold: Above expected progress
To ensure accurate evaluation, progress monitoring accounts for varying rates of individual student development. For specific students, achieving an 'Amber' percentage rate represents 'Green' (good progress) relative to their personalized baseline trajectory, reflecting meaningful individual growth regardless of peer comparisons.
English and Mathematics Progress
Progress in English and Mathematics is further evaluated using a numerical framework. Summative assessment percentages correspond to both a RAGG rating and a numerical value derived from historical mainstream performance benchmarks (measured from End of Key Stage 2 SATs to GCSE outcomes).
While the standard national target models 4 points of progress per academic year (equivalent to one full GCSE grade), targets at The Courtyard are individually tailored. Where necessary, targets are adjusted to reflect realistic, individualized expectations and accurately measure personal achievement.
