Personal Development

Curriculum Design

Courtyard students have often reported that they feel isolated in their communities. Our Personal Development curriculum is designed to support our students to develop in all areas of their lives. It is vitally important that our students are educated in key life skills with the intention of them living safely and independently.

Personal and Social Development is a core subject for all students. The curriculum is designed to ensure progression in knowledge, skills and understanding in key areas such as managing finances, managing social relationships and understanding personal identity and cultural diversity.

Relationship and Sex Education is delivered via 6 focus days throughout the year. We work in collaboration with organisations such as Brook and Let me know to deliver the curriculum content in a non-judgemental, relaxed and receptive manner, not avoiding the sensitive issues that young people are questioning.

Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Independence skills are developed during the daily keyworker sessions. Students are supported to develop strategies to support their abilities in these areas.

We use an excellent resource, Votes for Schools, to provoke discussion about equality, inclusion, bulling, discrimination and safeguarding, promoting British Values linked to welfare, preventing radicalisation and extremism.
